Since 2003, the Breakin’ It Down Conference has been met with success and has attracted nearly 3,600 participants. During the Pandemic, we demonstrated that in times of rapid change and urgent need, we could consistently deliver high‐quality virtual programming with measurable impacts.
Breakin' It Down uses an interactive agenda that focuses on key challenges in the field, encouraging professional excellence, promoting professional opportunity through networking and collaboration, and exploring best practices and different sustainability strategies. BID embraces an holistic-integrative approach centered on racial equity, community healing, reflective teaching and learning, networking, recognition, and advocacy. Each year, the Breakin’ It Down conference strengthens and expands our efforts, reaching new audiences and supporters while connecting with allies in advancing racial equity in the field of nonprofit, philanthropy, and fundraising. Participants leave with an increased understanding of a substantive range of pertinent issues and an increased ability to be agents of change in our field.
The Breakin' It Down Awards recognize leadership excellence in the field of nonprofit, philanthropy, and fundraising. The recipients will be honored at the Breakin' It Down Conference. The Awards program recognizes an individual in the nonprofit, philanthropy, and fundraising field and a nonprofit organization who are serving under-represented and underserved communities in the Chicago area, who have integrated racial equity with sustained strategic collaborations, and who lift pragmatic, action-oriented, and tenacious change makers. The objective of this Denise Stennis Awards program is not only to recognize those who do contribute but also to inspire others to make similar contributions to the field.
In 2019, the Denise Stennis Awards were established to pay tribute to the memory of Denise Stennis, a community leader, mentor, friend, and founding member of the Breakin' It Down conference.
In 2024, Breakin’ It Down announced its inaugural Emerging Leaders Awards for Leadership Excellence which recognize outstanding endeavors of newer professionals, community members, and volunteers and nonprofit organizations who have demonstrated a passion for and commitment to advancing racial equity in the field of nonprofit, philanthropy, and fundraising and significant impact in marginalized Chicago communities. The objective of the Emerging Leaders Awards is to encourage newer professionals and organizations to continue their careers and service, to help drive economic empowerment and inclusive mobility in communities and in the field.
Breakin' It Down attracts delegates from across the Chicago area and is typically attended by over 250 participants from the nonprofit, business, and education communities.
